Protest marches
IN REFERENCE to editorial of Stabroek News March 10, 2003, no doubt the marches protesting the killing of Yohance Douglas were orderly however what I recognized was that the grief of the Douglas family was hijacked by those who are forever looking for something to protest since PPP/C was elected to government. Anyone who is anyone got involved in the spree.

The local lawyers association became so revolutionary over to the death one got the impression it behaved like a parallel govt. it brought in its own pathologist, the president of the association gave the impression he was the DPP and head of state all in one.

Looking at the whole scenario it would appear as though some people were happy over the tragedy it gave them something to shout.

Most of those protestors I saw couldn’t care how many persons were killed by bandits.

Why the indifference
Every Guyanese without doubt is grieved over the death of Yohance Douglas whose funeral took place Monday drawing large crowds of sympathizers and friends and acquaintances.

It was indeed an unfortunate death caused, as it seems by media reports, police error and misjudgment.

It is equally sad the rampant murders of innocent citizens by bandits which seems not to have aroused the anger and response of society at large as Yohance Douglas’ s unfortunate death has, and whose funeral was even attended by the U.S. Ambassador, British and Canadian High Commissioners and other members of the Diplomatic Corps.

It is indeed sad and disappointing that there seems to be a difference in the widespread grief that attended the shooting death of Yohance and the, it seems largely ignored slayings of other peaceful citizens at the hands of violent criminals.

Many ask and openly wonder if they were not also human and genuine citizens of Guyana and why their demise and sufferings did not result in an equal outpouring of grief and indignation. Why for example didn’t the Diplomatic Corps including the U.S. Ambassador, and British and Canadian High Commissioners also attend the funerals of these victims. Why the difference?
